If you haven't yet heard, Ok Pare is a bookmark manager and a news aggregator service for the Filipino community. At this moment, Ok Pare has basic features only which most are not yet implemented.

I've created Ok Pare mainly for the Filipino community. Ok Pare's goal is to help people discover websites made by Pinoy.  Ok Pare is also a bookmark manager where people can store their bookmarks of Pinoy websites and access them from any computer. By storing your bookmarks of Pinoy websites, you are also sharing them to all users of Ok Pare. In this way, other people will also discover all the Pinoy websites you've found interesting.

People can also submit news or stories from other websites related to Pinoy. Ok Pare has its own bookmark ranking system to determine the popularity of a bookmark. All popular bookmarks, news or stories will be on top of our Popular Sites list which is displayed on our homepage. Our bookmark ranking system is currently under experimentation where it could change frequently depending on how people uses Ok Pare.

Essentially, Ok Pare follows the same concept or idea of other popular social bookmarking services and social news aggregator websites. However, Ok Pare targets specific community which is the Filipino community only.

Ok Pare also provides a Homepage feature for its users. Registered users can create their online profile, create multiple web pages, and add their own content. They can also add applications, widgets or gadgets, and link to videos from other websites.

The first beta version of Ok Pare was made available by March of 2008. As a bookmark manager and a news aggregator utility, it still lacks so many essential features such as a browser plugin, rss feeds, rating system, badges or gadgets, etc... It has also a lots of hidden features which I decided not to include in the first beta version.

As a Bookmark Manager

Ok Pare uses traditional tree-view management of bookmarks using categories and the new way to add multiple categories for one bookmark - "tagging". Tagging helps people to attached multiple categories or keywords for one bookmark. In this way, people can use their own keywords that can help them to remember a specific bookmark in the future. Tagging also helps people to easily access hundreds or thousands of bookmarks by just clicking on the keyword and all bookmarks attached to it will be displayed on the page.

A Tool to Keep in Touch With Your Friends

People can use Ok Pare to network with other people and see what they are bookmarking. By looking at other people's bookmarks, you will discover their interests and what websites they are visiting.

As a News Aggregator

People can share news or stories from other websites on Ok Pare. If a story is popular, it will have a bigger chance getting on top of our homepage. We use our own bookmark ranking system to calculate the popularity of each bookmarks. This Bookmark Ranking System is still under experimentation in which it could change frequently depending on how people uses Ok Pare.

Current Status

Ok Pare is unsuccesful in its first beta released. One of the main reason is that it only started as an experimental website. Ok Pare currently runs on a shared web hosting with a very small database storage capacity.

OkPare.Core 

Ok Pare was not created on top of an open source application. 99% of its features were created and coded from scratch (with the exception of this blog). It uses Asp.Net/C# 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005 as the development platform.

OkPare.Future

With our goal to help people discover websites created or related to Pinoy, Ok Pare will keep on improving all its features slowly but surely. There will be more improvements and interesting features to come in the future release of Ok Pare.
